Roche à Cupules

ST ALBAN DES VILLARDS

A roche à cupules (prehistoric carved stone) can be reached from St Alban des Villards, accessible from the waymarked path leading to the Col du Merlet.

The stone's many pits and cavities continue to intrigue the experts. Nobody really knows why, when or by whom these symbolic carvings were made. It is generally thought that roches à cupules date from the Neolithic period. If this is correct, the stones are evidence for the fact that the high mountains have benn frequented and exploited by humans since aroud 3000 BC. These carvings may indicate a religious cult associated with the summits and glaciers.
